Comrie Zero Waste Fortnight
On Thursday 12th November 2009 at 10.30am, a national first will be launched in partnership by the Comrie Development Trust (CDT) and Perth & Kinross Council.

The Comrie Zero Waste Fortnight is running between the 12th and 26th November 2009 and will be the first such campaign run in Scotland aimed at encouraging householders to put as little as possible in their general waste bins by reducing, reusing and recycling more materials, more often.

Attending the launch at the Comrie Boulevard - the grassed area under the bridge opposite the Field of Refuge Car Park - will be Councillor Alan Grant, Perth & Kinross Council's Environment Convener, pupils from Comrie Primary School and members of the Comrie Development Trust. The public are also welcome to attend to have a look at the selection of banners advertising ways of reducing, reusing and recycling waste.

Residents within the Comrie Parish boundary are being encouraged to sign up and pledge their support to the Zero Waste campaign to reduce waste to landfill during the Fortnight, either by calling in at the CDT Office or Comrie Library, or by signing up online at www.pkc.gov.uk/comriezerowaste.

There are also displays at the CDT Office and Comrie Library highlighting ways of reducing and reusing waste and where and what items can be recycled within Perth and Kinross and also nationally. Throughout the Fortnight, householders will be encouraged to think about the waste that they produce and increase the amount that they recycle, with the aim of not putting anything in their general waste bin. Such actions contribute to the Scottish Government's vision of moving towards zero waste and increase the Perth and Kinross recycling and composting rate.

A diverse range of events will be held throughout the Fortnight to provide householders with support and information on how to further reduce their waste, to inspire them and to have fun while they help the environment! These events will include a litter pick along the riverbank, a reusable bag initiative and a free Nappuccino event run by Perth and Kinross Real Nappy Network (PKRNN), who will also be running a Bring and Sell or Donate Event for baby toys and equipment. Anyone who would like to donate items or have their own stall at the event should contact PKRNN on 01738 476476 or email nappies@pkc.gov.uk

All the pupils at Comrie Primary School will be visiting the Webwalk at Friarton Recycling Centre during the Fortnight to learn more about waste and recycling. The Bike Station and The Comrie Croft will be teaming up to hold a Recycled Bike Sale of children's bikes, Dr Bike session and chance to explore the trails on The Comrie Croft's estate. Ex-hire bikes, mostly for adults, will also be available to buy from The Comrie Croft.

Two events at Cultybraggan will offer advice on composting at home or as a community, with free transport to the events on the Comrie Community Transport Bus. Known as the Coco Bus, it is run by a voluntary committee and used by local groups within the village. On Wednesday 18th November, the Coco Bus will run between Comrie and Cultybraggan starting at 9.45am and making its final run back to Comrie at 12noon. Similarly, on Saturday 21st, the Coco Bus will run from 11.45am from Melville Square until 2pm when it will do its final run back to the village. Free compost will also be available at Cultybraggan and anyone wanting to collect some should bring along a bag and a spade.

Information on all the events being held throughout the Fortnight can be found at the CDT office, Comrie Library and online at www.pkc.gov.uk/comriezerowaste

Lending his support to the campaign, Councillor Alan Grant said: "The people of Comrie have already outlined their commitment to recycling and composting, and to creating a sustainable community. What we are trying to do is create a fortnight of waste and recycling best practice in the hope that such campaigns become more commonplace."

"As an incentive, for every tonne that the community in Comrie can divert from landfill, Perth & Kinross Council will donate the £62.00 per tonne that it usually spends on waste disposal to Comrie Primary School."
