Scottish Waste Awareness Group
The Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG) was set up in 2000 with the remit of changing public attitudes and behaviour towards domestic waste.

The key objectives of SWAG are:
  • To influence the actions individuals can take to deal with waste.
  • To influence the reduction of waste produced in the home.
  • To increase public awareness and encourage positive action with respect to waste generation and management.
  • To increase the level of personal responsibility for waste.
  • To overcome inertia and to promote the 3R's – Reduce Reuse Recycle
The SWAG Steering Group is chaired by John P Summers, the Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful. The group has representatives from the following organisations:
  • Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM)
  • Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA)
  • Community Recycling Network for Scotland (CRNS)
  • Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB)
  • Recycling Advisory Group Scotland (RAGS)
  • Scottish Government (SG)
  • Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)
  • Scottish Environmental Services Association (SESA)
  • Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP)
SWAG receives financial support from the Scottish Government and SEPA.

One of SWAG’s key aims is to deliver the national campaign, Waste Aware Scotland. This campaign aims to raise awareness of, and change public attitudes and behaviour towards Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The campaign is delivered at a local level through a range of campaigning activities and in parallel with the implementation phase of the National Waste Plan for Scotland. The National Waste Plan sets targets for waste reduction and recycling, initially focusing on Municipal Solid Waste.

SWAG is also developing a range of national Waste Aware resources. Please click here to find out more about these resources and SWAG's other Core Activities.

SWAG also works towards creating more understanding and recognition of the need for Waste Management Facilities of all types and raising the profile of waste, which continues to increase, as an environmental priority.
